Nantucket Lightship Baskets

Vases:

Robert Cosgray, Jan & Don Weir, Mary Howard

Although there have been rumors that Nantucket baskets were woven so tightly that they could hold whale oil, the likelihood of that is minimal due to the unavoidable gaps between stave and weaver and the fibrous nature of the cane used. Today’s artists have found a way to make them “water tight”. Rather than using traditional wooden molds, artists have begun to use glass as both the mold and a permanent part of the basket, allowing for a fitted interior that can hold water and help display your bountiful blooms. Artists such as Robert Cosgray, Mary Howard, and Jan & Don Weir have found a variety of glass forms to work with, enhancing the silhouette of the Nantucket basket and coining yet another use for them.

Assorted Vases Woven Over Glass
by Jan and Don Weir.

Assorted Vases Woven Over Glass by Jan and Don Weir. Husband and wife team Jan and Don Weir have been weaving together for over ten years and work exclusively for the Guild, weaving during their lengthy summer visit to the Island. Their baskets woven over glass are made in the traditional manner and have a light coat of polyurethane on the basket and as such, the baskets can be cleaned by a light rinsing of warm soapy water and then a thorough rinse and towel drying. Because the base is made of hardwood, care should be taken to avoid prolonged exposure to water. The glass insert is permanently fixed to the wooden base and so this basket can be filled with water to use for many decorative applications. Assorted Vases Woven Over Glass by Jan and Don Weir.
